Last Friday, March 21, 2025, I attended a Testimonial Dinner honoring our School’s 2024 Barpassers who are now lawyers.
I am now in my last semester of law school. I intend to graduate this June 2025. I plan to pass the Bar this September 2025 and become a lawyer by early next year at the age 50.
I got a few takeaways from the testimonial dinner. I want to somehow preserve or commemorate the emotions and realizations I personally experienced during the activity. Hence, this journal entry.
1. I realized that I only have 2 months left before I graduate. Immediately, I felt this feeling called separation anxiety. 4 years of proper law school study resulted to establishment of great friendships that I know would last a lifetime. My classmates and friends, most of them are younger than me to the point that they can be my sons and daughters already, whom I share this ardous journey of law schooling found comfort and strength in enduring and even enjoying law school. This journey will end by June 2025 and I miss them already. I’ll be forever be grateful to them, specially my Row 4 group of friends.
2. It dawned on me that the fruits of my sacrifices are within my sight already. I remember declining invitations to outings, socializations and foregoing family activities because I need to attend or prepare for classes. It is not only me who sacrificed a lot, my wife, my kids, my boss, and my family and friends. They all tried to undertand this journey and supported my dream. I am immensely grateful for their love and support.
3. As funny at it seems, I will also miss my strict professors. They literally pounded my brain during recitations, hopeful that they can still cull out the right answers from my limited understanding of law (haha). Minsan tapang na lang dala ko kapag pumapasok sa class kasi di naka-prepare. I now understand that they are just preparing us for the real battle outside law school. We need to fight for the rights of our clients when we become real lawyers. We need to become fighters. I am thankful for their patience and concern. I believe that most of them would become my lifetime friends when we become colleagues.
4. I thank my School, My Alma Mater, University of Perpetual Help of Laguna (UPHSL) College of Law for providing quality education and for the 50% discount tuition fee discount for government workers. Without the discount, I may not be able to start nor finish law school. Without the quality education, I will not become a lawyer soon. I believe in the strength of my batch this Bar exam. We will make you proud.
5. Thank you Lord God for this second opportunity. It felt like I got a reboot in college life. I gained friends, started a band, founded a fraternity, become student council president, and so many things that I am so grateful for. Lord, hindi lang po ako magiging magaling na lawyer – magiging mabuti din po akong lawyer. I’ll pay it forward, probably by teaching, publishing books, or providing hope to those who needs them. This is my personal promise to You.
“And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” – Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist
I want this. This is my dream. I am working hard for this to happen.
I got support. The universe is conspiring. Lord, please help and guide me follow through this to the end. I know this is my mission – You told me way back in 1994, when I was 18 years of age, when I was first elected Brgy. Kagawad. Let’s do this.
