Our Purpose
The Public Domain Literature Library exists to make enduring works of fiction and nonfiction freely available to anyone with an internet connection. We believe that literature belongs to everyone, and that the riches of the past should not be locked behind paywalls or lost in forgotten archives. Our catalogue brings together carefully selected ebooks that have entered the public domain under applicable copyright laws, presented with enough context to help readers choose, understand, and enjoy them.
How to Use the Catalogue
Each catalogue entry includes bibliographic information and identifies the source digital edition. The book page links to its Project Gutenberg source record, where available reading and download formats are provided by Project Gutenberg. How Books Are Organised
Each entry in the catalogue is built around a specific edition or collection. The title page provides the author’s name, original publication date (where known), a description of the work’s content and significance, and a set of reading notes that highlight themes, historical context, and literary connections. Where relevant, we include a note on the source text used for transcription and any editorial emendations made. This structure is designed to be useful whether you are a casual reader, a student, or a researcher.
Metadata and File Presentation
We take care to present accurate metadata: author, title, language, and a precise description of the work. Files are prepared in standard formats and checked for basic readability. Where enabled, we provide a preview of the first few pages so you can sample the prose before downloading. If a book was originally illustrated, we include those illustrations when they are part of the public-domain edition.
Contextual Reading Notes
Many catalogue entries include a short essay or set of notes under headings such as “Background and Themes,” “Text and Context,” or “Reading Companion.” These are written by NCEAA Catalogue help situate the work in its literary and historical moment. They are meant to enrich, not replace, the experience of reading the original text. For instance, Stand Pat; Or, Poker Stories from the Mississippi — Background and Themes includes discussion of the riverboat setting and the narrative use of card games, while Kreativity For Kats — Context and Discussion explores the playful intersection of animal characters and creative advice literature.
Correction Handling
We strive for accuracy in transcription and metadata, but errors can occur. If you notice a mistake—a typo, a misattribution, a broken link—please let us know by email. We review each report and, where appropriate, issue a corrected version of the file or update the catalogue record. Our goal is continuous improvement, not perfection.
